December 23, 2012 The Lyons Family is saddened to hear that Dave’s younger brother Glenn passed away early this morning (12/23). Dave and Glenn were best of friends and loved and served each other and their families. We will miss them both dearly.

In addition to Dave’s brother Glenn, his nephew Ron Carter passed away peacefully on December 23rd, just hours after Glenn. We continue to be saddened by the multiple passings in the Lyons/Carter family during this otherwise joyful season.

12/12/12

The Lyons Family wishes to announce the passing of David Betts Lyons of Okotoks, Alberta. P1040132-obit-web Dave is the eternal companion of Cheryl (Baker) Lyons. He was born the 30 of July 1945 to George and Ilene (Betts) Lyons, who are deceased. He passed peacefully on December 12, 2012 in the Foothills Hospital following an eight year battle with cancer. Dave was given only six months to live when first diagnosed, but through his faith, determination, and with the love and support of his family he lived eight fulfilling years.

Dave will be remembered for his sense of humor, positive attitude, and his love of serving his fellow man, especially those in need. He had a great love for the Savior Jesus Christ, his wife Cheryl, his six sons, and 22 grandchildren. His dog, Abby, was also a much loved, constant companion during his illness.

Dave always put his family first and devoted much of his time to creating family experiences and traditions that made his family close and strong. These traditions continue to bless the lives of his children and their families.

Dave’s many friends and acquaintances will remember him for the living example of faith and charity that he always demonstrated. Dave had an unfailing testimony of the Restored Gospel and he was a strong missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He and Cheryl loved the time they spent together serving in the St. George, Utah Temple.

Dave had a 50 year career in the tire industry, owning several businesses. During his long illness, he even worked with his son at Ward Tires. Three weeks prior to his death he was still delivering tires. Dave loved to deliver tires to his friends in the industry. There was no such thing as a customer to him — they were all his best friends.

Dave is survived by his beautiful wife Cheryl, his six sons and their wives Dean (Val), Darren (Kimberly), Robin (Dorothy) Ryan (Lea), Sheldon (Michelle), and Brandon (Olivia), 22 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Dave was the second youngest of thirteen children. He was predeceased by his sisters Rosa, Winnie, Reatha, Jeanetta, and by his parents George and Ilene. He is survived by his sisters Mary Louise, Joan, Doreen, Lorraine and his brothers George, Joseph, Neville and Glenn.

Dave will be dearly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of his life will take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 384 Banister Drive, Okotoks, Alberta on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 11am.

Please feel free to share your story about Dave or Glenn, send your condolences or well wishes:

I met Dave while stranded on the McLeod Trail with a dead car and an extremely important doctors appointment. He did not hesitate to help me out. He drove me to the doctors and was willing to wait and drive me home if needed. On the ride into Calgary he asked me questions regarding where I was from what my husband did. One day, after asking my husband and I to help with the painting of his place in Glenwood, I asked if he was born into the LDS church or was converted. He asked how I knew and I said I just did. From then on we started discussing the church. He introduced me to Cindy Cooper, Monique Hardy and that was the start of my conversion.
Dave was more than a friend. I often call him my spiritual father – the father I never had. Cheryl and Dave quickly become like family to me. I cannot express the amount of love I have for them. My children have that same love for them as well. I cannot express my gratitude to Dave for leading me to the church to which I knew one day I would belong. I cannot express what an inspiration Dave was and Cheryl is in my life, their kindness, compassion, love of life and for the Savior. Forever in my heart!

This is a story about Dave that I have used in lessons and talks. It is sooo Dave! He was and is a great guy with a great family! We love him and miss him.

Dave Lyons owned a Texaco gas station with a tire shop attached in 1979. It was located where Totem is now on Macleod Trail in Midnapore. Dave wouldn’t open the shop on Sunday even though Texaco wanted him to. However one day the Texaco tanker came in and filled up his underground gas tanks. It cost $6000. Dave wrote a cheque for the amount even though he only had $450 in his account. He hoped that he would have terrific sales on Friday and Saturday. He did not and was very worried about covering the cheque he had written. One of his employees said that he would like to work Sunday and would come in and handle it by himself. Dave was desperate so he agreed. Sunday morning, Dave had a Priesthood meeting at 7am. The first speaker said “If you aren’t successful in your business in six days you are not going to be successful in seven.” As soon as the talk was over Dave left and called his employee and told him not to come in to work. The station would be closed as usual on Sunday. Dave wrote a cheque for $450 and paid his tithing. Now he was stressing big time. Monday morning came and Cheryl phoned to ask how it was going. Dave said “all hell has broken loose. The pumps are very busy, people are buying tires and accounts are being paid up. Redi-cut Lumber who has an account with us gave me a signed blank cheque. I called to see what was up and they told me that they wanted to pay up their account in full, also for this month which wasn’t over yet. I was to fill in the amount.” By the time the bank opened Monday morning they had $6000 in the bank to cover the cheque to Texaco.

Also, we are saddened at the passing of Dave’s brother, Glen. He too was our friend. Whenever we talked with Glen, he talked about Dave. They were not only brothers, they were best friends & spent much time together. We believe that they are together again, separated only for a short time. Our thoughts & our prayers are with Charlene & her family.

I have known Dave since we were teenagers; met at a garage, of course! Besides those carefree teenage memories, as husbands & fathers, we continued making memories. Dave & Cheryl, Lynne & I had some intense card games as young married couples so many years ago. Our older children remember visits to the Lyons’ home. We enjoyed our visit to St. George just a few years back & last Christmas in Okotoks. This past year we weren’t as good as we should have been with visits but we kept in touch by phone often. Then how blessed we were to have been with Dave, Cheryl and their family on Sunday, Dec. 9, just a couple of days before he was called home. That day will always be in our hearts. Our prayers are with you, Cheryl, & your family.
Dave loved his family, his many friends & the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you, Dave, for your friendship & your good example. We will miss you but will meet again.

David, David, my brother David, remember when you told me of the assignment from your bishop, to fast and prey to see whom the Lord wants as the new relief society president in your ward. He gave you 3 names to consider, and after 2 days of fasting and prayer, you were out in the hot sun changing the tires on a large truck, and suffering for food and drink, and still no answer to your prayers. So with your fast over but with no answer you finally ate and drank. At the bishops meeting, the bishop asks you who the relief society president should be and you said I don’t know, but it’s not one of those three whose names you gave me. during sacrament meeting you pointed out a sister in the congregation and asked the bishop who is that lady, and the bishop said she is sister so and so, and she is not active and doesn’t live the word of wisdom, and you said that’s who the Lord wants to be the new relief society president. The bishops interviews her and the choice was right. A true and faithful servant.
Do you remember after having six sons and no girls, you asked one of your boys, how do you tell the difference between a boy and a girl, and after thinking for a moment he said if they have a pretty face,it’s a girl.
When we were building Kim and Darren’s house in Sand Point Idaho, do you remember??? Oh so many memories.
Now that you’re in heaven, will you see if you can get me in, when my time comes..
    Love George..

Dave was my family’s home teacher from the time I was quite young. He came faithfully every month and we always enjoyed his visits. Over the years I came to see him more like a grandpa than a home teacher. I remember as a teenager being so disappointed when Dave was assigned to home teach other families. After a few years though, he was again assigned to home teach my family. I happened to be visiting my parents’ last month when he faithfully came once again to deliver the home teaching message. This was the last time I saw him and it is exactly the way I always want to remember him…as a home teacher who loved his fellow man and loved the Lord. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.

When Brandon and I were just graduated and Brandon was getting ready to go on his mission we used to play a lot of Risk the board game. It was the night before Brandon was going to get his endowment and we were playing in the basement and we were pounding cokes back and talking trash to each other. Dave came down at about 11 and asked us to stop being so loud and to take it to the garage and to shut it down at a reasonable hour, due to the endorsement session the next morning. So we set back up in the garage, hopping he wouldn’t hear us there and at about 3am Dave came storming in the garage with only his garements on and started giving Brandon the gears about not taking his priesthood responsibilities seriously and he couldn’t believe that the night before his endowment, which was pretty early the next day Brandon was not in bed, getting well rested for his big endowment day. We all left very quickly and I believe Dave got in trouble from Sheryl for stopping our game. It was a great memory.

We are so sad at the loss of David. He was such a great guy and such a good example to Leon and I. We admired him so much when he made the effort to walk each day with his beloved dog when I know that the effort was everything. He said if he didn’t get out of bed and go today that he knew that tomorow he wouldn’t be able to. He was a spiritual giant. I gained so much from his testimony. May God’s arms be around you at this time, Cheryl. We love you.

  15. Konda and Rex Fullmer Family

I have only good memories of my Uncle David. He was always, always, ALWAYS kind to me. He was quick with a smile and a chuckle and looked at you with sincerity and made you feel important. He was anxious to offer help and followed through if there was anything he could do for you. I love Uncle Dave and I think of him as a medical miracle. I know he loved his family deeply and is so proud of the wonderful people they have become. Hugs to Cheryl. Hugs to my cousins. Hugs to those 22 grandchildren that are heart broken I’m sure, to loose their awesome grandpa. I’m so grateful for the glorious plan of salvation and the promise that families can be forever!

Dave is such a great man, and I know that he has returned to our Heavenly Father with honor. I enjoyed him as a friend and serving with him in the St. George Temple. I know that he will always be there for you Sister Lyons. Dave will now be very busy working for the Lord on the other side, teaching the gospel and fulfilling other assignments for our Lord. He was a light for the Lord here and he will continue to be a bright and shinning light for our Lord on the other side.
